Love's Bestiary

by Elias Siqueiros

Brass Etching by David Fischer
about this piece

Nine giraffes lift with the pen the starving moon.
Whosoever is witness carries a child's knife.
Nine distinct pandas mark their hats with the enigma
of the crucifixion.
Nine distinct tulips break their legs.
No one moves beyond the light,
no one reads the book, the flashlights bleed.
Nine settlers drink of the crowded room.
Six infants crawl toward the opening of the stream.
Six horses free the sky from its pollution.
Three hundred rivers break beneath each footstep.
In Central Park we still hear of the surgeries
being performed without light.
That is my love beside the madness of lost bodies.
She breathes from my life in her hand.
She drinks the sky from her face.
She is the circle of all dream, complete, without the hat
to close my memory.
Without a key to demand me, she is complete.
