Prelude
by Allen McGill

Cast: One male (HE), One female (SHE), both dressed in black.

Curtain: Stage black. Spots up on HE-down right and SHE-down left. They move down center as play progresses, not seeing each other until they bump.

HE: I've been roaming around in this void forever. It's awfully monotonous.

SHE: I'm perfectly comfortable, and I always have been. It's so lovely and warm. I'm quite content to stay right here.

HE: I don't like it when it's cold. I get all shriveled up. But, sometimes I get so full of energy, I dash here, there and everywhere—at least I think I do. In this dark, it's hard to tell if I'm really moving at all.

SHE: Sometimes I'm so happy I just burst out singing. [sings] 'Some day he'll come along...' There's that melody again. It keeps popping into my mind. I wonder what it is.

HE: [sings] 'Something's comin', somethin' good...' God, I sing well. I wish I knew what the words meant!

HE & SHE: [bump] Oh!

SHE: Hey, be careful! Why don't you watch out where you're going!

HE: It's not me who has to be careful. [bumps her again]

SHE: Why do you keep doing that?

HE: I don't know. It just seems like the natural thing to do.

SHE: [pause] What happens now?

HE: [pause] Well...if it's a boy, what do you think of the name Adam?

HE & She: [kiss]
